RSA Fellow Dr. Fairfid Caudle recently attended the Annual Convention of the Freedom From Religion Foundation in Portland, Oregon, and was honored to be elected to its Board of Directors.  This is an organization which works to maintain the separation of State and Church, as required by the U.S. Constitution. You can find out more about the organization at www.ffrf.org. Fairfid is Professor Emerita of the Department of Psychology, the College of Staten Island (CUNY).

Some of us live in states where public events always begin and end in prayer;
however, the selection of religious leaders of are selected ecumenically . That “compromise” with the law totally misses the point .Yet, citizens believe such a practice is fair, in complete ignorance that people exist who are atheists or belong to religions where prayer is anathema. The prayer practice is a tradition is rather universalmin the US. To militate against this practice for many would trigger complaints that they are being deprived of religious freedom.
