Citizen Power: Closing the Gap

in Cities, RSA-US

At the heart of the RSA’s contemporary mission is the question of how to close the gap between the society we’ve made and the society we want.  An example of work taking place in this context is the Citizen Power project in Peterborough; where the RSA is working with the local authority and others to generate a practical understanding of sustainable citizenship and piloting new approaches in schools, drugs services and the arts.  Here in the US, Fellows are engaged in re-visioning their cities – in Providence, Arthur Mark and Mark Motte are convening a discussion on the Problems and Possibilities of 21st Century Cities. Fellows in Chattanooga have recently conducted Stand, a community visioning effort for the Chattanooga region, and others are actively pursuing ways to make life better for their communities in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Memphis, Edgefield SC, and elsewhere.

What does better look like and how do we get there?  What can Peterborough or Providence learn from Edgefield or Pittsburgh?  I invite Fellows to share lessons learned and work ongoing in your city.
