What will they think of Next?

Around the US some wonderful Fellows’ projects are in development: have you thought about sustainability from the perspective of fashion? Is there an outfit that would take you from the bike path to the boardroom?  What about helping underserved kids learn to read through art?  Or using thermographic imaging to audit energy waste in your community?  From Bronxville to Chattanooga, New York City to San Diego, Chicago to Rhinebeck, RSA networks are developing innovative and unique ideas, forming working groups and connecting across regions, sectors and disciplines.

Hello, Lynn:

I found the subject matter of “The Wrong Trousers” to be very interesting — and wish I had been able to attend the Sustainable Fashion Design discussion in NYC.

What seems like only a few years ago — but was, in fact, in 2003! — I conducted a class project in which students had to create a pair of trousers on an industrial electronic Jacquard loom, cut them out of the loom — and wear them; without any sewn stitches!

The process was presented the following year at an international design conference at the Heriot-Watt University, in Edinburgh, under the title: “Donald Whar’s yer Troosers”.
Of course, I made the presentation in my kilt — with the special Jacquard-made trousers rolled-up, underneath!

For anyone who might have an interest in this basic project, I have appended the file “DONALD.pdf”, under this letter.

Several years later, a PhD student continued in this vein and created a wonderful fashion garment, direct from the Jacquard. It is on display in our College of Textiles.

Had to respond to this, Lynn — since there seemed to be such a unique connection of ideas.

Yours,

Alan.

Alan – your troosers sound delightful. you can’t attach anything to this site, but if you send it to me i’ll put it up for you. it’s also good to add links – perhaps you have a link to the Jacquard trousers in the College of Textiles Exhibit?
