Humanity’s capacity to generate new ideas and knowledge is its greatest asset………Human rights call on us to ensure that everyone can create, access, use and share information and knowledge, enabling individuals, communities and societies to achieve their full potential”, The Adelphi Charter (2005)

How does legislation cope with the constant tension around shifting technological and social contexts of the 21st Century?  There are many more questions than answer.  While the many benefits derived from technology are constantly expanding, so are the associated negatives and the unanswered questions: how can we protect our privacy, what are children experiencing online, how is information collected and used by behavioral ads, the smart grid, and social media sites?  At the global level, what are the implications of Google’s withdrawal from China?

Inspired by the RSA’s Adelphi Charter on Creativity, Innovation and Intellectual Property, three RSA conferences took place over three years to bring together some of the world’s leading experts on cyberlaw, technology, creative industries, and social trends.  A booklet summarizing the conference proceedings was published in 2008, sponsored by the UK Intellectual Property Office.  For a copy of the booklet contact LBroadbent@rsa-us.org.
