An important milestone was reached in forming a local committee to promote sustainable living in the Village of Bronxville, New York. About 35 people met at the Village Hall April 15 to learn more about Grassroots, a nonprofit organization that helps local communities to get organized.
The mix of representatives was encouraging. It included a representative of NYSERDA, the NY state organization to promote energy saving. The next steps include:
- A mission statement and quantified objectives showing how to save energy, save waste and save money, summarizing what Green is about.
- Students should be asked to suggest how they can help over the summer and take on one or two projects within such a framework. The purchase of a couple of infra-red video cameras could be a great way to show people whether they are saving or wasting money. Could the committee raise $2-3k and tie it into a science project?
- The website for Bronxville Green should be launched and start to collect ideas about best practices and information on where to go for help including Grassroots. It then becomes the place to get things organized and moving ahead. Again, young people could help with this.
RSA-US Trustee Robin Thompson will continue to support and advise on this initiative, which was originally inspired by an RSA network event.
