The Financial Crisis and Rethinking the Role of the International Community
I work off of the assumption that the global financial crisis we are still going through has fundamentally changed the international economic agenda going forward. Global trade and financial liberalization that we have pursued since the end of World War II has created a vastly new, more prosperous world and also one with a new set of challenges and opportunities. Within this broad discussion of “what next”, my focus is on the need for new thinking as to the role of the international community in facilitating effective states and democratic governance. We are in desperate need for whole of government/whole of society approaches to the issue of effective states/prevention of failing states and I have some ideas re both the process and the content. Within this broad theme, is the issue of innovation in the public sector as I fear that public sector capacity will not be able to keep up with change and carry out its essential role in setting and enforcing rules unless public administration is re-thought in a radical way.
I would like to hear from other Fellows interested in developing this. Post your comments here.
