Internet and Community: What does the future hold and what lies ahead in the next decade?
Panel Discussion
The DuPont Summit on Science and Technology
December 4, 2009, 11 – 12 noon
Location: Carnegie Institution for Science
1530 P St. NW Washington DC, 20005
In a recent blog post, Matthew Taylor wrote: “The web is changing culture, relationships and organisations. Its effects are real and important. Sometimes they are good and sometimes not. The exaggerated claims of those who say the internet is inherently a destroyer of organisations and hierarchies or that it is bound to lead to greater democracy and collaboration are an unhelpful distraction from the important study of the internet’s real impact on real lives.”
To discuss how the Internet is changing our lives, Nigel Cameron, FRSA, President and CEO of the Center for Policy on Emerging Technology, will lead a panel discussion at the DuPont Summit for Science and Technology, with:
Erik Fisher, Assistant Professor, School of Politics and Global Studies, Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes; Assistant Director for International Activities, Center for Nanotechnology in Society; Arizona State University who will speak on Internet, Community and Assessment;
Michael R. Nelson, Visiting Professor of Internet Studies, Communication, Culture and Technology Program, Georgetown University (and board member, Center for Policy on Emerging Technologies), will speak on The Crowd, the Cloud, and Peer-to-Peer Governance;
Jules Polonetsky, Co-Chair and Director, Future of Privacy Forum, will speak on Personal Information: Intelligence That Will Power the Smart Grid And The Achilles’ Heel That Could Take It Down
Erica Newland, Center for Democracy and Technology will speak on Refocusing the FTC’s Role in Privacy Protection with Leslie Harris, Ari Schwartz, and Jonathan Dunn
The DuPont Summit on Science and Technology, sponsored by the Policy Studies Organization, brings together academics, government and society leaders to discuss the development and direction of the Science & Technology agenda of the Obama Administration.
