Frances Whitehead and James Elniski have generously agreed to open their unique home for an RSA meeting on September 9. Frances and James are faculty members at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Multi-Modal Sustainable Design

The GreenHouse Chicago was conceived as a sustainable model for urban living — an integrated, alternative energy, artist live-work space in a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood. This machine for urban living serves as a demonstration project for green technologies, and also as a model of beautiful, imaginative, adaptive reuse of a remediated brownfield and outmoded structure. The project integrates geothermal heating/cooling, wind turbines, photo-voltaics and solar thermal panels in combination with other passive features to generate about 50% of the household’s energy needs. As a demonstration project, the building also includes other notable green design features, such as a greenroof, rainwater collection cisterns, interior courtyard and many local and recycled materials. Also conceived with multi-generational and accessible design criteria, the project aims to represent “the complete set” of available systems, amenities, and ethical design principles.
After a tour of the house, there will be informal networking over a glass of wine. RSA Fellowship Director Belinda Lester, Head of Networks Michael Devlin, and US Fellowship Director Lynn Broadbent will talk about the current work of the RSA globally and the new Fellowship Council.
