New Haven, CT: Networking and Visit to Beinecke Library, Outcomes

in At The Watercooler, Connecticut, For Fellows by Fellows, North East Region

Outcomes of this visit, apart from a good group getting together to see great architecture and rare books. include plans for more network meetings in Connecticut. (See Calling Connecticut).  Some happenings will be specific to a local area such as New Haven and Hartford CT.  Others will draw people from much further afield and the Newsletter will ensure that we get the word out where it is needed to amplify the message.

Discussion about the RSA included views about maintaining quality in a time of rapid change: quality of events, quality of FRSA selection and quality of thought in guiding the growth of RSA in the United States.  We also heard comments about the RSA Journal and website being less UK-centric.  The group would like to see more articles and input from outside the UK regarding universally important subjects such as education, innovation, health care and sustainability.

Thanks to Louise Bernard for hosting and so eloquently talking about the exhibitions of Van Vechten photographs and Visionaire Magazine.  Louise has been a Fellow for several years and is the Curator of Drama and Prose Writings of the Yale Collection of American Literature. She is at work on a book dealing with existentialism and psychoanalysis.

Thanks also to Phil Schenck who organized dinner at the Graduate Club.  Phil wants to hear from CT Fellows with a view to planning regular meetings.

As a potential East Coast event, the Exhibition “Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward” at the Guggenheim Museum – jointly curated, designed and produced by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, might be of interest to RSA-USA members and Fellows.

If there is an interest, please feel free to contact me. I’ll be in New York again next week (27th) and also again in June.

We’re all pleased with the new RSA-US “grass roots” approach to
furthering the purposes of the Society. Having a fellow propose and
develop meetings to explore his/her area of interest will help all who participate gain intellectually, socially and professionally.

The RSA-US blog and newsletter has increased interest in what is going on and what we can do for each other and the Society. The the new face of RSA-US encourages all of us to active involvement.

The enthusiasm of Fellows in the US is truly fantastic. But why should we be surprised? Has anyone before asked for their engagement?

Now we seek help from recent graduates with the necessary computer and analytical skills to help us grow the network.

Arthur Mark is looking for someone in New England. Carole Franco in CT and I in NY. Any summer intern seeking an opportunity to broaden their experience in tackling major social problems such as sustainability or science in education are most welcome to apply.

Phil – many thanks for this kind offer. Great minds think alike as we are already planning a Fellows visit to the FLW exhibit in July. Watch this space!
