Fellows from Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, Tennesse, North Carolina and West Virginia enjoyed an informative tour of Jefferson’s Monticello. Highlights included the sustainable elements in 17th and 18th century design and the evolution of Monticello as one of the only United Nations World Heritage sites in the United States. The new Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center incorporate many environmentally friendly, sustainable design features and operating systems. Monticello is pursuing Gold Level certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). In addition to the architectural tour, discussions included the viability of a solar flashlight which could be assembled by the consumer in third world countries (a prototype was passed around); the floating environmental education field station in development at UVa (the Learning Barge); development work in Africa; capacity building in the regions and future meetings to be organized in Raleigh, Chattanooga, Washington DC and Charlottesville.
